Half the boats leaving Virpazar advertise "private tours". Most of them aren't. A private tour means you charter the whole boat — not that the operator squeezes two families onto one deck and calls it exclusive.

What 'private' should actually mean

Three things:

1. Only your party is on the boat. Not a "shared private", not "small group private". Just yours.
2. You choose the route. Or at minimum, you can tell the captain what you want to see and he adjusts.
3. You choose when to stop. For photos, for swimming, for a monastery, for lunch.

If a tour meets those three, it's private. If it doesn't, whatever they're calling it, treat it as a group tour with a smaller group.

Why bother with a private tour?

Three reasons, in order of how often they actually matter:

Reach. The far monasteries — Beška and Moračnik — are 25 km from Virpazar. No group tour goes that far, because they'd have to charge €50 a head and the boat wouldn't be full. A private tour is the only way to see them without an overnight.

Pace. Group tours run on a timer. Private tours run on you. Want to sit in a bay for an hour eating lunch? Fine. Want to detour to see a pelican colony? Fine. Want to skip the touristy monastery stop and just swim? Also fine.

Silence. This one is underrated. Skadar Lake is quiet. On a group boat with fifteen people, it isn't. On a private boat, you notice the sound of the water and the birds.

What a private tour lets you do that a group tour doesn't

• Reach the outer monasteries. Beška and Moračnik are worth the trip.
• See the pelican colonies. They shift location month to month; only a captain who's on the water daily knows this week's spot.
• Swim in a hidden bay. The good coves aren't on the group route.
• Do a proper photography session. Slow the boat, wait for the light, come back to the same spot.
• Combine cultures. A monastery in the morning, an Albanian-Montenegrin lakeside village for lunch, a swim in the afternoon. Group tours never combine any of those.

Which boat should you choose for a private tour?

Two real options.

A traditional wooden boat is the classic Skadar Lake choice. Shaded, slow, atmospheric. Perfect for families, older travellers, birdwatchers, and anyone who wants the postcard experience. A private sport boat is the choice if you want to actually see the lake. Fast, exposed, reaches the far side. Route B — The full-lake sport route (4–5 hours)

Depart Virpazar → open water crossing → Beška monastery → Moračnik monastery → pelican colony spotting → swim in a hidden southern cove → return. Best for adventurous travellers.

Route C — The photographer's route (5 hours)

Depart Rijeka Crnojevića before sunrise → river bend at Pavlova Strana light → lily-pad channels → Kom monastery in soft morning light → return by 10am, before the wind. Best for photographers.

Prices in 2026

• Private wooden boat, 4 hours: €180–240 total.
• Private wooden boat, full day: €300–380.
• Private sport boat, 4 hours: €280–350.
• Private sport boat, full day with lunch: €450–550.
• Sunrise photographer's charter: add €30–50 for the early start.

Prices are for the whole boat, up to the boat's capacity (usually 6–8 for wooden, 4–6 for sport). Splitting between four people makes private tours very close in per-head cost to a group tour.

Red flags to watch for

• "Private group tour". An oxymoron. It's a group tour.
• Fixed departure times. Real private tours leave when you're ready.
• Fixed itinerary. If the operator won't customise, they're just selling the group tour route to fewer people.
• Booked through a coastal booking desk. The middleman takes 20–30% and you have no idea which boat you'll end up on.
• "Includes lunch at our restaurant." Fine — if the restaurant is good. Ask which one. If they won't say, it's the tourist trap on the main square.
