Updated July 2026 · 10 min read

Virpazar sits at the northern tip of Lake Skadar, exactly where the Podgorica–Bar highway crosses the water. It's easier to reach than most people expect — but the last kilometre is a narrow village lane and the parking situation in July surprises everyone.

Where Virpazar actually is

Virpazar is a village of ~300 people, 35 km south of Podgorica and 20 km north of Bar. The E80/M2.3 highway passes it. The exit is signposted "Virpazar / Skadarsko jezero" — take it, cross the old stone bridge, and you're in the village.

From Podgorica

  • Car: 35 min via the E80. Straight shot south. Fuel a car? Do it in Podgorica — Virpazar has no station.
  • Distance: 38 km.
  • Bus: Podgorica ↔ Bar buses stop in Virpazar on request. Every 60–90 min. ~€3, ~50 min.
  • Train: The Belgrade–Bar line stops in Virpazar. 4–5 trains per day. ~€2, ~35 min.

From Budva

  • Car: 60 min via Sozina tunnel and E80. 65 km. Easiest route by far.
  • Bus: Take a coastal bus to Bar (30 min), transfer to a Bar–Podgorica bus that stops in Virpazar (25 min). Total ~2 hours with waiting.

From Kotor

  • Car: 90 min via Budva and the Sozina tunnel. 90 km. The tunnel toll is €3.50.
  • Longer scenic route: Cetinje → Rijeka Crnojevića → Virpazar. 2 hours, but the Pavlova Strana viewpoint alone is worth the detour.

From Bar

  • Car: 25 min via the E80 north. 20 km.
  • Train: 4–5 daily trains, ~€2, 20 min. Perfect if you're staying in Bar.
  • Bus: Every 60–90 min, ~€2.50, 30 min.

From Tivat airport (TIV)

  • Rental car: 75 min via Budva and Sozina. Simplest option if your boat tour is same-day.
  • Taxi: ~€70 one-way. Book before landing.
  • Bus + train: Bus to Budva, bus to Bar, train to Virpazar. Doable but 3+ hours — only if you're staying overnight.

By train

The Belgrade–Bar line stops right in Virpazar. Station is a 5-minute walk from the marina. Timetable: zpcg.me. The train is the most scenic and reliable way to arrive — the Podgorica → Virpazar leg crosses the Cijevna gorge and drops down through the vineyards to the lake.

By bus

Any Podgorica ↔ Bar or Podgorica ↔ Ulcinj bus can drop you at Virpazar — tell the driver "Virpazar" when you board. The stop is at the highway junction, about 300 m from the bridge. Buses run every 60–90 minutes from ~6:00 to ~20:00.

Parking in Virpazar

Three options, in order of stress:

  • Old bridge lot (free). ~20 spots. Full by 9:00 in July.
  • Train station lot (free). ~30 spots, 5-min walk. Full by 10:30 in July.
  • Reserved private parking. Some operators offer free reserved parking a few minutes from the boats when you book with them — the only stress-free option in high season.

Where the boats actually meet

Most tour boats depart from the quay on the far side of the old stone bridge, not from the roadside marina you see first. Cross the bridge on foot, look for your operator's sign or a captain waving your name. Arrive 10 minutes early — captains want to leave on time.
